Intervention petition deadline approaches

REDINGTON TOWNSHIP – The deadline to request intervening status regarding zoning for a proposed mountain top wind farm is May 19.

Maine Mountain Power LLC, comprising Endless Energy Corp. and Edison Mission Group, filed an application to rezone 1,004 acres to allow installation of 30 wind turbines on Redington Pond Range and Black Nubble Mountain in December.

The application for the $130-million project, which would be built about 4 miles west of Sugarloaf/USA in Carrabassett Valley, was accepted as complete by the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission in February.

Anyone interested in seeking intervenor status must file a petition to the commission no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, May 19, LURC Senior Planner Marcia Spencer-Famous said Monday.

Essentially an intervenor gets a copy of the entire file and can cross-examine at the public hearing, which has been scheduled for the week of July 31 in the Carrabassett Valley area, with exact dates to be announced, Spencer-Famous said.

However, because all of LURC’s records are available to the public, anyone can get a copy of the entire file, or any part they are interested in, she said. The agency has to charge for photocopying, she said. Also, anyone can testify at a public hearing, just not cross-examine, she said.

LURC will act on any intervenor petitions at its regular business meeting on Wednesday, June 7, in Dover-Foxcroft.

A pre-hearing conference for LURC staff, the applicant, and the intervenors has been scheduled for Thursday, June 8, at the Department of Conservation’s Harlow Building in Augusta.
