Investigators ID victim of car fire

TOWNSHIP 30 (AP) – Investigators Tuesday released the name of the man who died in a weekend car fire near a pond in this Washington County township.

The state medical examiner’s office confirmed that the victim was Morgan Gathercole, 24, of Bangor.

Investigators said Gathercole apparently fell asleep in the car as it was left running Saturday afternoon and the vehicle’s exhaust system ignited pine needles underneath.

A man who was fishing with Gathercole at Salmon Pond, Daniel Inman, 48, of Bangor, tried to put the fire out, fire marshals said.

Salmon Pond was also the scene of an unrelated drowning that morning in which a Bangor man died after his boat swamped while fishing.
