Iona last D-I winless team

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) – Iona dropped to 0-20 on Saturday, remaining the only winless men’s team in Division I college basketball.

The Gaels fell 71-61 to Loyola of Maryland in Saturday’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. Gerald Brown scored 25 points for Loyola (12-8, 8-2). The Greyhounds held Iona to just one field goal in a 9-minute stretch late in the first half and early in the seond.

Kevin Hassett scored 14 points, and Milan Prodanovic added 12 points and six rebounds for Iona. The Gaels fell to 0-10 in conference play with its 21 straight loss dating to last season. Last year, they won 23 games and claimed the conference title to advance to the NCAA tournament.

They hung with eventual Final Four team LSU for most of their first-round game, leading by five points at halftime.

To go winless this year would be an embarrassment for a team with a proud basketball tradition, eight NCAA appearances and famous coaches including Jim Valvano, Tim Welsh and Ruland, who was an All-American and an NBA All-Star. Iona won a game in 1957 when the governor of Mississippi refused to let Ole Miss play Iona because Iona had a black player.

As for this year, nine regular-season games remain, and Iona still has home-and-away games against St. Peter’s, which is 3-16.
