RUMFORD — Ivon J. Gallant, 89, of Rumford, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, with his loving family by his side.
He was born May 7, 1928, in Rumford, a son of Anthony and Catherine (Gaudet) Gallant.
Ivon was a WWII Veteran, joining the U.S. Navy in November 1945, in which he served on the USS Ranger, the USS Saipan, the USS Randolph and the USS Wright. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 27, 1949. Following his discharge, he married his devoted wife, Irene Richard, on June 12, 1949. Together they celebrated 69 wonderful years.
He was employed in the Oxford Paper Mill, and after 42 years retired from Boise Cascade and enjoyed 31 years of retirement.
Together with his wife, Irene, they wintered in Florida, spent summers camping at Cathedral Pines, and spent many days watching the grandchildren and great-grandchildren at all of their sporting events.
Ivon was a proud member of the VFW, the American Legion and the Webb River Sportsman Club of Dixfield.
Surviving are his wife, Irene, of Rumford; his five children, Janice Melton and husband, Jim, of Kenduskeag, Bob Gallant and wife, Fay, of Wheelock, Vt., Donna Hamann and husband, Lee, of Rumford, Mike Gallant and wife, Cindy of Rumford, Barry Gallant and Tara Cahalin, of Chalfont, Pa.; grandchildren, Kirk Gallant, Jenni Hamann, Craig Hamann, Stephanie Gallant, Catherine Melton, Barry Gallant Jr., Lindsay Gallant, Caitlin Gallant, and Corabelle Gallant; great-grandchildren, Kameron and Kate Gallant, and Adelyn Gallant; sisters, Ester McPhee and husband, Ernie, of Rumford, Ann Cronin and husband, Bill, of Kingston, N.H.; a brother, Louie Gallant, and wife, Saundra, of Wilton; as well as many nieces and nephews; and also very special friends.
Ivon was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Doris Jenson; and a brother, Leo Gallant.
