Jay school budget to get hearing

JAY – The School Committee will hold a public hearing on the revised $9.85 million school spending plan for fiscal 2008 on Tuesday. The board will meet after the hearing with selectmen to discuss school consolidation.

The new proposal is $614,403 less than last year’s budget and $110,182 less than the $9.96 million budget that voters rejected in June.

The budget proposal will go to public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at the Jay Middle School cafeteria.

It will then go to voters in a referendum on Aug. 21 at the Community Building. At least 740 voters must cast votes that day or the budget will automatically fail whether the two questions on the ballot are approved or not. That’s because that was the number of voters who cast ballots in June, and an equal number or more is needed to approved the budget now.

The School Department is operating this summer on up to $500,000 voters approved to use until a new budget is approved.
