SOUTH PORTLAND — Southern Maine Community College presented scholarships to seven fire science students on Oct. 20, in recognition of their academic performance and community service. Justin Shink of Jay was among the recipients.
The scholarships not only help recognize the work of the students and help them overcome financial barriers, but are also reminders of the lasting contributions made by the scholarship namesakes, according to Steve Willis, SMCC fire science department chair.
“We are so appreciative of the scholarship families’ and donors’ efforts to assist these very deserving students,” said Willis. “These scholarships really make a difference.”
Shink received the Timothy D. Carr Memorial Scholarship, established upon Carr’s death in 2009 in recognition of his contribution to fire protection, firefighter training and education and the fire science program at SMCC where he was a faculty member and department chair.
Shink is volunteer firefighter with Jay Volunteer Fire Department, and is in his second year as a live-in SMCC student with Windham Fire Department. He hopes to work for a municipal fire department as well as own his own business.
