Jay van stolen, recovered in Carthage

JAY —  Police recovered a van stolen from an Elm Street home early Saturday morning. They are continuing their investigation of thefts from 11 other vehicles in the area.

The owner of a blue 1996 Ford van reported hearing his vehicle start up and then saw it being driven off as he was getting ready for work. The key was left in the van.

Jay officers Nicholas Gulliver and Michael Mejia responded to the call about 12:31 a.m. Saturday, Jay police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

During their investigation, Officer Gulliver found someone had rummaged through 11 other vehicles in the area and taken items from them.

Sunday morning the van was found behind a church on Route 142 in Carthage. Cpl. Nate Bean and Deputy Nate Reid from Franklin County Sheriff’s Department collected evidence from the vehicle, which was then returned to the owner.

Sgt. Troy Young Sr. of the Jay Police Department followed up with victims Saturday as they became aware their vehicles had been entered.

The thefts are still under investigation and police are following up on some leads, White said. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Jay Police Department at 897-6766.
