Joan Bauer Howard

EXETER, N.H. — Joan Bauer Howard, 83, of Stratham, N.H., died unexpectedly Jan. 4, at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born March 8, 1929, in Lewiston, daughter of the late Ernest Bauer and Pauline (Pulsifer) Worth. Joan grew up in Auburn, one of two children. She graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn and later from Westbrook Junior College in Portland.

She was then employed as a retail buyer for the clothing store Owen Moore, where she also did modeling. Joan was blessed with both inner and outer beauty. She lived much of her life in the Portland area and raised her two daughters in Cape Elizabeth. Joan was a member of the Portland Junior League, volunteering at their thrift shop and performing in the follies. She enjoyed creating award winning flower arrangements as a member of her local garden club. For many years, Joan enjoyed spending time at the family ski home at Sugarloaf, as well as boating on Casco Bay. She also enjoyed spending time at the beach.

In 1978, Joan married Jerry C. Howard. They later moved to Stratham, N.H., in 1986. Together, she and Jerry became members of the Stratham Community Church.

Joan was cherished for her warm and engaging personality. People were drawn to her unique sense of humor and she delighted in occasional lighthearted pranks. Joan always maintained a youthful presence.

Through Joan’s creative passion for decorating and her love of antiques, she created a warm and comfortable home reminiscent of her grandmother’s farm, where she spent many childhood summers. After her daughters grew up, her artistic skills continued to develop and her creations continue to live on in the homes of her children and grandchildren.

Joan’s primary concern was the health and well-being of her family.

Joan is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Howard of Stratham, N.H.; daughter, Cynthia Luce of Yarmouth and daughter and son-in-law, Heidi Luce Pelletier and Thomas Pelletier of Montpelier, Vt.; five grandchildren, Amy Gardner and her husband, Patrick, Molly Gleason and her husband, Adam Webster, Beth Kittredge and her husband, Andrew, James Pelletier and Samuel Pelletier; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Owen, Amelia and Lucy; her beloved sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Peter Profenno of Portland; three nephews, Michael, Daniel and Paul; and her great-nephew, Lucas.
