Julia M. Garneau


Canton – Julia M. Garneau, 93, of Pleasant Street in Canton, and formerly of Main Street in Peru, died May 6, at Victorian Villa Rehabilitation & Living Center.

She was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Jersey City, N.J., a daughter of William and Anna Balcunas.

She was educated in Mexico schools and lived locally all of her life.

She was employed for 10 years with Diamond Match Co. and later as a clerk at Newberry’s Department Store in Rumford.

She was a communicant of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Mexico.

She is survived by sisters-in-law, Frances Moffett and husband, Vern of Santa Maria, Calif., Priscilla Hilgenberg and husband, Donald, of Matlacha, Fla., Beverly Powell of Peru, Jeanne Blunda and husband, Vito of Peru and Audrey Garneau, and Midell Garneau, both of Peru; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Maurice Merrill in 1935; her second husband, Cleston Garneau in 1983; a son, Robert Merrill; and a sister, Mary Downs.
