Juvenile charged in bus bomb scare at Gray

LEWISTON — A Gray Middle School student was charged Friday in connection with a bomb scare that shut down local roads in the morning.

The juvenile was not identified by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, which responded to the incident.

Shortly after 7:30 a.m., a student apparently made reference to a bomb having been put on a local school bus, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. That bus was transporting students at the time in the area of Route 202 and Lawrence Road in Gray. The driver was told of the threat and pulled off the road and evacuated the bus of all students.

Sheriff’s deputies closed off the immediate area and searched the bus for a bomb. A bomb-detection dog from Portland Police Department came to the scene and searched for a bomb and explosive devises, but found none.

The student who was charged was released to a guardian.
