Kate Schrock she infuses her songs with stories of spiritual struggles

NORWAY – Singer-songwriter Kate Schrock has been working on new material for an upcoming album, “Invocation,” featuring music inspired by her travels and work with members of the Wailers in Jamaica. This is not traditional reggae per se, but spiritual consciousness-inspired music fused into the roots soul music that is Schrock’s forte.

Joining Schrock lately has been accomplished Mexican classical guitarist Jeff Rojo, who has trained with bolero master Alfredo Gil. Together, they will perform Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Fare Share Commons, a cooperative natural foods market and art gallery/performance space in the downtown.

Schrock’s music blends rock, jazz, and gospel with a pop angle to create dark emotional melodies and musical textures. Influenced by such artists as Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Elton John and Odetta, she has become a testimonial songwriter. She exalts the power of her music by infusing it with stories of truth, beauty and spiritual struggles. These elements fuel her poetry and create the roots of her music.

Schrock is also a painter and claims her visual art is inextricably connected to her songwriting. Her paintings grace the covers of both Shunyata and Dames Rocket.

Kate has shared the stage with such artists as Ellis Paul, The Samples, BoDeans, David Mallett, Stephen Stills, Taj Mahal, Sophie B Hawkins, Wayne Kramer, and Mick Taylor of The Rolling Stones.

In the mid ’90s, after attending The University of Chicago and Bennington College, Schrock became a self-made pianist/singer/songwriter and a gifted lyricist whose songs have the power of short stories. She produced five albums and toured all over the United States and Canada for nearly a decade. In 2004, she traveled to Jamaica to record with members of The Wailers. In the same year, she traveled to the upper Amazon basin of Ecuador for humanitarian work and education with Heifer International, an organization founded by her grandfather.

On her own independent label, Kakelane Music, Schrock produced and released five albums: “Refuge,” 1994; “Shunyata,” “Dames Rocket,” 2000; “Live At The Majestic,” 2001; and “INDIANA,” 2003. Her songs have graced many compilation CDs, TV and movie soundtracks, including “Felicity” and the 1999 release of MGM’s “Carrie II The Rage.”

Schrock has recently been working in conjunction with Bullseye Records of Canada for national and international distribution and with The Famous Music Publishing Companies for TV and film.
