Auburn -Kenneth H. Kane Jr., 59, of King Street, Oxford, died peacefully on Dec. 30, at the Hospice House, with his loving family and friends by his side. The light snow stopped, the sun peeked through the clouds, and our dear Ken was welcomed to the next phase of his soul’s journey.

He was born in Portland, on Aug. 18, 1947, to Kenneth and Shirley (Rhoads) Kane.

On July 22, 1984, he married the former Susan Snow.

He graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1965. He attended the University of Maine, Portland and Nasson College, receiving a degree in business administration in 1970. He served his country in the 133rd Unit of the Maine Army National Guard and as an aviation reserve officer (candidate) in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam.

In the early 1980s he started his career as a flight instructor at the Oxford County Regional Airport and had been active at the airport throughout the years since. During his 6,000 hours of flight time, he enjoyed introducing his love of flying to many. His most special student was his son Ryan, who shared his passion for flight.

He worked for many years at the American Legion Post 150 in Mechanic Falls as the lounge manager. He also served his legion as the finance officer for 14 years. He was the secretary for the appeals board for the town of Oxford from 1990 until July 2006.

During his retirement he enjoyed many hobbies including playing Scrabble, horse shoes, canoeing, fishing, being in nature, reading and spending quality time with family and friends.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Susan of Oxford; his son, Ryan, his pride and joy, also of Oxford; his mother, Shirley Kane of Yarmouth; sisters, Stephanie Cormier, and husband, Joseph, of Freeport and Kathy Kane of Bernardsville, N.C.; uncle, Thomas Kane ll of Scarborough; aunt, Shirley Smith, and husband, Woodrow, of Melbourne, Fla.; nephews, Bradley Beeler, and wife, Sara, of Rhinebeck, N.Y., Adam Beeler, and wife, Bonnie, of Smyrna, Ga., Christopher White of Camden, Scott Slack of Portland and Tyler Slack of Oxford; a niece, Sara White of Camden; brother-in-law, Paul White, and partner, Bernie Marquis, of Stetson; two sisters-in-law, Donna Slack, and husband, Rick, of Oxford and Carol Snow of Mechanic Falls; two special grandnephews, James Beeler and Theodin Slack; two special grandnieces, Emily and Kate Beeler; many cousins; and several friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Kenneth H. Kane Sr.; an uncle, Ellsworth Rhoads; an aunt, Helen Emmons; and a cousin, Nancy Hagen.

He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family wishes to extend a warm and heartfelt thank-you to all the health care professionals who cared for Ken during his illness in particular the kind and caring staff of the Hospice House who provided comfort in his last weeks.
