Thursday, July 5, marks the beginning of L/A Arts’ free Music in the Parks summer concerts. July concerts are in Lewiston’s Fountain Park in the Bates Mill complex behind FX Marcotte Furniture on Mill Street, near Chestnut and Lincoln streets). August concerts are in Auburn. Performances begin at noon and last about one hour.
The series opens July 5 with Truth About Daisies, an original folk-rock quintet based in Portland. The band features four-part vocal harmonies and draws inspiration from a range of stylistic traditions, including urban folk, groove-country, reggae, and melodic pop.
Truth About Daisies’ sound is built around the songwriting of Doug Swift and Sheila McKinley, who combine to play guitars, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica. The versatile rhythm section – equally at home in a slow country waltz or a driving, Latin groove – consists of percussionist Burd, bassist Ronda Dale and drummer Dan Sonenberg.
This year, every concert is guaranteed to happen on the scheduled date, thanks to the generosity of the , who have consented to be the alternative rain location for these outdoor concerts. In case of rain, concerts will be held at the same time and date at the Franco-American Heritage Center, 46 Cedar St. If in doubt the day of the concert, tune in to radio station EZ1240 or OXO County 92.7 and 100.7.
“We were concerned about presenting concerts in Courthouse Plaza this summer because of all the construction that is planned on neighboring buildings as well as the intense heat that builds up at noontime in the space. We’ve had concerts at Fountain Park before and found that it is a really nice venue. Plus, we’re hoping the new DaVinci’s Eatery location will be up and running by concert dates, which will give our audience an additional dining opportunity,” said Cheri Donahue, L/A Arts marketing director.
“Our only concern is that the location of Fountain Park is not well-known. We have put a map with the concert sites starred on all of our Music in the Parks posters that are being posted around town, and we have a downloadable map on our Web site, www.laarts.org,” she added.
