La Rencontre group to hear talk by author

LEWISTON – La Rencontre will meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday May 5, at the Franco-American Heritage Center, 46 Cedar St.

The monthly gathering will feature Rhea Cote Robbins, who will talk about the Franco-American Women’s Institute, as well as discuss her exhibition on “Maman Disait.”

“This show is not simply an exercise in nostalgia, but how I choose to reclaim for myself the proverbs, and to give meaning to them as I see them, part of the everyday magic of life,” said Cote.

She attended Waterville High School and was brought up bilingually in a Franco-American neighborhood in Waterville. Robbins is a Franco-American author of creative nonfiction, poetry and essays. She is the author of “Wednesday’s Child,” the 1997 Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance Chapbook Award winner.

The meal will feature chowder, turkey, ham and veggie wraps, chips and dessert. All will be furnished by Campus Cuisine, and everyone is welcome.

The goal of the two-hour program is to speak French and socialize. The price is $6.50, and reservations must be made by calling Claudette at 786-6936 or the center at 783-1585.
