Labor Council to host public issues breakfast in Lewiston

LEWISTON — The Western Maine Labor Council will host its second Legislative Breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Green Ladle. The event is free and open to the public.

Invitations were sent to 50 state legislators representing Androscoggin, Franklin, Oxford and Sagadahoc counties. Organizers expect more than 100 attendees for the buffet-style breakfast and question-and-answer session.

The forum will allow residents to ask questions of lawmakers in an informal, nonconfrontational atmosphere, according to organizers.

This year, several issues are being addressed in Augusta that affect working men and women and retirees, including right-to-work legislation, LD 1725, which would change the Unemployment Insurance system; and LD 1571, which is an overhaul of the Workers’ Compensation System. The governor’s budget plan, which would remove 65,000 people from the MaineCare rolls, is also expected to be discussed.

The breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. Formal discussion will begin at 8:45. RSVP to Joe Mailey at 786-3750 no later than 5 p.m. Friday.
