1961 – 2014
POLAND — Laurie May Perry Drinkwater, 53, of Poland, passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family, after a courageous battle with lung disease on Monday, Dec. 8.
Born on May 16, 1961, Laurie grew up in Portland, where she graduated from Waynflete School; she received her business degree from the University of Southern Maine.
Laurie worked on the waterfront for many years. She was the independent business owner of Books are Fun for the past seven years out of her home. She highly enjoyed gardening, yard sales, fishing out on the lake and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.
Laurie was a member of Windham Church of the Nazarene, where she was baptized and gave her life to Jesus. She also helped pastor the Great Island and West Point Churches of the Nazarene.
Laurie is survived by her loving husband, Pastor Mark S. Drinkwater, of Poland; mother, Gale Petersen, of Portland; son, Andrew A. Baker and Jodi Anson of Rumford; daughter, Elizabeth B. Kane and Richie A. Murphy of Gray; and son, Kyle C. May and wife, Monica May, of Poland; as well two stepdaughters, Leah Drinkwater of St. Augustine, Fla., and Teresa and husband, Michael Wright, of Windham. Laurie is also survived by two brothers, Richard Varney and wife, Barbara, of South Portland and Linwood Cordwell of Florida; and three sisters, Marjory H. Leonard and husband, Walter Tibbetts, of Oxford, Jeannie Jones and husband, Lee, of Windham and Kate Moon of Maine. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Andrew Baker Jr., Trinity Murphy, Zachary Murphy, Myesha Baker, Natalia Baker, Gabriela Wright, Lillianna Baker and Hunter Wright.
Laurie was predeceased by her first husband, David P. May II; her father, Burnham L. Perry; and grandmother, Natalie E. Petersen.
There will be a celebration of life service held at Windham Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, Dec. 20, at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Laurie Drinkwater Summer Camp Scholarship Fund, c/o Lighthouse Ministry, 26 Sawyer Road, Poland, ME 04274.
