Laurier Gilbert


MECHANIC FALLS — Laurier Gilbert, 61, of 146 North Main St., died Monday, April 26, at the John Murphy ICU Home, where he had resided for the past seven years.

He was born in Lewiston, Sept. 8, 1948, the son of Arthur and Rose Alma (Turcotte) Gilbert.

Up to the age of 18, Larry was treated at the Shriners Hospital in Boston.

He never went to Pineland, but he attended daily the Social Learning Center in Lewiston while living with his mother until he was 41 when she could no longer care for him. He then went to live with Lois and Rick Depres for 10 years. He later went to live at the John Murphy Home in Mechanic Falls and attended daily the Employment Enrichment Services in Auburn.

He loved all the staff at the John Murphy Home. He brought joy to many people with his comical behavior. He loved telling jokes, teasing and being an entertainer to the entire staff.

He had a love for music and was always happy to attend the dances at the YWCA in Lewiston.

He will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends.

He is survived by his sister, Jeannine Daigneault of Lewiston, and his sister and guardian, Juliette Ouellette and husband, Raymond, of Lewiston; his brothers, Arthur and wife, Loraine, of Lewiston and Bert of Florida; his brother-in-law, Donald Burpee; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his sister, Liane Burpee.
