AUBURN – Kim Lawrence was superb on the mound and cracked a double for Edward Little as the Red Eddies upset Lewiston 4-1 in KVAC softball action Thursday.
April Gerry had a pair of hits, including a single in the four-run fifth inning for the Red Eddies (3-10). Lawrence fanned two and walked none as she improved her pitching record to (3-5).
The Blue Devils (8-7) scored first to make it 1-0 in the third inning when Katie Cobb plated Brittany Nadeau, who had gotten on base as the result of an error. Cobb had a pair of hits in the losing effort.
Freeport 5, Poland 4
FREEPORT – Kaylen Donovan and Tiffany Stilkey belted RBI singles in the second inning to lift Freeport to a 5-4 victory over Poland.
Brittany Doane picked up the win for the Falcons (4-10), allowing six hits.
The Knights (6-7) were paced by Katie Simpson with three hits and two RBIs. Starting pitcher Kristen Simpson was saddled with the loss after a damaging second inning.
Rangeley sweeps doubleheader
AVERILL – Kate Jamison threw seven innings of two-hit ball and received strong support at the plate as Rangeley rolled past Forest Hills 5-1 in game 1 of a late-season softball doubleheader Thursday. Emily George led the Lakers (5-3) with three hits, while Kelsey Wentworth added two.
Crystal Allen walked seven on the hill for Forest Hills (6-6) and was tagged with the loss. The two teams were tied at 1-1 until the sixth inning when Rangeley’s bats came to life.
In the nightcap, Rangeley exploded for 15 runs in the fifth inning and went on to notch a 24-9 victory. Ashley Quimby, Krista Jamison, Hayley White and Ali Godaire all belted out three hits for the Lakers (6-3), while Kate Jamison and Abby Madeira added two each. Angela White held Forest Hills (6-7) to just four hits and picked up the win.
Forest Hills was paced by catcher Vicki Pease with two of their four hits.
Dirigo 10, Winthrop 2
WINTHROP – Katie Hutchinson notched her eighth pitching victory of the season as Dirigo raced to a 10-2 victory over Winthrop.
The Cougars (12-3) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning on several walks, a Dani Thompson single, an RBI single by Shannon Daley and a two-run single by Ashley Noyes. Hutchinson combined with teammate Abby Fenstermacher on a five-hitter.
The Ramblers (2-10) eked out runs in the third and sixth innings to prevent the shutout.
Georges Valley 15, Mt. Abram 6
SALEM – Jessica Keating smashed a grand slam in the third inning to lead Georges Valley to a 15-6 victory over Mt. Abram.
Chelsea Eugley led the Buccaneers (7-4) with three hits, while Desiree Smith and Jessica Keating added two hits apiece. Vanessa Frisbee held Mt. Abram to nine hits to notch the win.
The Roadrunners (8-6) were paced by Asia Burrill with a double, while Emily Stinchfield, Bethany Wheeler and Brittany York all belted doubles. Loghan Walker handled pitching duties for Mt. Abram and was tagged with the loss.
Madison 16, Mtn. Valley 4
MADISON – Ashley Marandola received some excellent offensive support to notch the pitching victory as Madison rolled to a 16-4 triumph over Mountain Valley.
The Bulldogs (9-4) collected 11 hits over six innings without recording an extra base hit. Amanda Costa, Jessica Hayden, Amanda Poissonner and Marandola each tallied two hits for Madison.
The Falcons (4-10) shortened Madison’s lead to 7-4 in the third inning, but couldn’t silence the Bulldogs bats over the next four frames.
MCI 4, Mt. View 0
PITTSFIELD – Kristy Huff and Jordan Kennedy combined for a 3-hit shutout as Maine Central Institute blanked Mt. View 4-0 in softball action Thursday.
The Huskies (8-6) scored their first run when Ceara Lasselle walked and scored in the third inning. Tiffany McLaggan pitched in with two RBIs for the Huskies.
Despite being scoreless, the Mustangs (3-11) outhit the Huskies by a 3-to-2 margin.
