NORWAY – The American Legion Stone-Smart Post 82 and Auxiliary gathered May 10 for a potluck supper, installation of officers and meetings. Incoming commander Ernest Clifford and president Kim Hansen had charge of the supper.

Past Department Commander Gene Bickford was the installing officer, assisted by Past Department Commander Gard Enman as sergeant-at-arms and Second District Commander Jerry Greenwell as chaplain.

Officers installed were: commander, Ernest Clifford; first vice commander, George Tibbetts; second vice commander, Ralph Millett; finance officer, Ralph Moulton; adjutant, Leland Millett; chaplain, John Morgan; historian, David Tilley; service officer, Robert Sessions; Americanism officer, Randall Henley.

Sergeant-at-arms David Day was unable to be present and will be installed at a later date. The officers will assume their duties in June.

Following the installation, Commander Randall Henley called the Legion meeting to order. Henley presented new member Alan Hazelton with a Legion membership pin and welcomed him to the post.

The charter was draped in memory of Past Commander Vernon Brown, who had died since the last meeting. He had been an active member of the post for 56 years. Brown’s son, Raymond, thanked the post for everything it had done.

Americanism Officer Bob Sessions announced that Elliot Munn and Jack Pike II were chosen to be the post’s delegates to Boys State in June at the University of Southern Maine. Alternates are Colin Mansfield and William Rolph.

Sessions said plans for the Memorial Day ceremonies are close to completion. The parade will start from Advertiser Square at 9 a.m. Memorial Day, May 29, and march to the Norway Veterans Memorial Park across the street from the Legion. The local National Guard unit will furnish the firing squad.

Post members will gather at the Legion at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, and go to Pine Grove Cemetery to place flags on veterans’ graves. Arrangements are being made to get the flags in place in the other cemeteries in town.

Floor revitalization chairman Ralph Moulton said the hardwood section of the main floor had been sanded and four coats of finish applied by Doug Kilgore.

The plywood section will be covered with a commercial vinyl in a couple of weeks. Plans are to have the stage and entryway floors sanded and finish applied in June.

Named to the Executive Committee for the coming year are Gene Bickford, Arnold Pendexter, Lloyd Herrick and Larry Labossiere. The fifth member will be named at the next meeting.

Delegates to the Legion state convention June 16 to 18 at Bangor are Leland Millett, Ernest Clifford and Ralph Millett. Gene Bickford is a delegate-at-large and Randall Henley was named alternate delegate.
