I am not sure how much longer Maine officials are going to sit back and let people get in accidents and die on Route 4 between Auburn and Livermore.
People drive much too fast in that area and nothing is ever done about it.
I try to avoid that route as much as I can because of people who seem to think they own the road. I never see police going up and down Route 4, and that is a joke. What are Maine officials or the cities waiting for? A huge pile-up that will kill or injure many people?
Even in the winter, that road is awful; it seems like it's the last road in the town to get attention. This past winter, a good friend of mine almost lost her life due to the road conditions. I feel that is unacceptable and there is no need for it.
Money is spent fixing the flowers on the sides of the roads or for sweeping when something else should be done.
I have a little girl now and I live in the SAD 52 district. When my daughter gets older, I'm going to fear for her life every time she needs to take that road to visit a friend or go in town.
People should not have to wonder if their children are going to make it down Route 4 OK.
I'm outraged at how that road can be passed by, year after year. There is no need for it.

It is not the roadways that are a danger, but the people who drive on them!

The problem with driving the speed limit is that you have the country boys with their F250s riding your bumper. These plow boys want to pass you at any cost. What's the rush? They just turn off at DD. Tron is right. More deputies on Route 4. Please ticket! No warnings!

I do agree, Route 4 is dangerous. BUT, only so much can be blamed on road conditions. People are reckless and drive much too fast. I think this is what makes it dangerous. Furthermore, winter conditions (or wet) make any road treacherous, and driving behaviors must be modified to accomodate for changing conditions. Just because you have a 4X4 does not by default make one "safer" during inclement weather, nor does it give you the license to drive faster. I think Tron is right about stepping up the level of patrol as a way to slow down motorists. I think this might be the first logical step.
I think a solution to decreasing the number of head-on accidents would to turn Route 4 into a divided highway----but I do not see this happening any time in the next million years. My parents drive Rt. 4 daily and I do worry about the rate of motor vehicle accidents on this stretch Ms. Hunt describes. Until those jersey bumpers go up between north and southbound lanes, people, please exercise caution and drive the speed limit and exercise judgement. Speed limits are not intended to "piss" one off---they do have a purpose as an attempt to maintain the safety of motorists. If you are indeed in such a rush, leave twenty minutes earlier!

insist your leaders to demand the Androscoggin County Sheriff's department patrol the road on a regular basis. After all they've got plenty of deputies who don't know what to do with themselves, horsing around at the County Building, maybe you guys could get your Commissioner to increase coverage. After all they just approved the hiring of a bunch of new deputies, might as well have them put down the duct tape and do some actual work, for a change.
