I was amused by the Sun Journal's concern (editorial, Dec. 14) that the reduction of Social Security withholding rates by 2 percent would put the "program that works" in some jeopardy. The concern was that future benefits would have to be funded by Congress, as not enough would be collected from America's working people.
The editorial writer seems to think that all of the money that has been contributed to Social Security, plus that matched by employers, has been invested for the writer's benefit over all of those long years of pounding at the keyboard.
The writer is not alone; many people still believe that their contributions have been "put away" for their retirement years. Imagine their dismay when they find out that all of those contributions have already been spent by Congress, both Democrat and Republican. All we have to show for the 6.2 percent are IOUs. Those IOUs are in the form of government bonds, several trillion dollars' worth that can only be converted to cash by some future vote of those similar, honest congressional types who have already spent our "nest eggs."
Guess where the funds will come from to convert those IOUs to cash in the future? That's right — then-current taxes.
Contrary to what is said, there is no "trust fund." People were taxed once, in the form of "Social Security."
We'll be taxed again, to convert the bonds to cash to pay future benefits.
Happy holidays, America.
Robert Stone, Auburn

Go to your happy place
I am so tired of conservatives constantly wringing their hands and spouting off about taxes. My uncle, Mr. Stone, and all the other conservatives in this country. The Empire paid taxes to Caeser and it hasn't stopped since. I don't love paying taxes and I'm not happy about the Social Security situation, but for the love of Pete, try to think of something else. My 19 year old daughter's boyfriend grew up among conservatives and the poor kid wants to have conversations with me about his concerns regarding capital gains taxes. Dude! Play a video game or something! And the rest of you, close your eyes and go to your happy place. For me, that would be a beach environment. For you conservative types, it might be an apocalyptic bunker. Either way, try to think of something positive for a minute!

Maybe if there had been less "going to the happy place" and a little more facing reality; a little less video games and a little more work getting done we wouldn't be in the mess we are in as a country and certainly a lot of individuals and families would not be in the mess they are in.

Pay attention to the boyfriend, dudette. It's likely that he'll be working to pay your social security. But, who cares? Go back to the beach, chug another mai-tai, munch a few more sugar-plums, and live for today. Somebody else will take care of your tomorrows. Is that positive enough?

This profound advice brought to you by someone with two taxpayer funded pensions and taxpayer funded health care - and that qualifies him to pontificate about what the rest of the world deals with. Avast, swabbie! Mop that bilge.

As soon as Social Security began in1936, people believed their "contributions" (read "extortion") went into a personal account and started earning interest. And the government did absolutely nothing to dispel this delusion.
People also believed that SS was the national retirement plan. In reality, it's an emergency backup to avoid having old folks living in abject poverty. As always, private individuals had and have the primary responsibility to prepare for their own retirement. Surprise! The government encouraged this fairy-tale because they quickly realized what a cash-cow this scheme was.
Finally, in the biggest act of hypocrisy of the 20th century, they set the age at which you could begin collecting benefits higher than the current life expectancy. That is, FDR hoped the system would never pay out a dime. But then those ungrateful people started living longer.
fixit001, there is plenty of money to pay benefits now and in the future. Just trade some of those IOU-s for a mountain of newly printed dollars. Our current government is well experienced in these matters: bailouts, QE-s, TARP, etc. All that new money cheapens the value of the dollars already in the pool, a situation known as inflation. This hits people hardest when buying food and energy.
But wait! Those two items have been dropped from the equation used to determine if SS recipients deserve a COLA. What a coincidence.
75 years of hypocrisy with no end in sight.

making it clearer so people can understand. You should add to that all the free bees being handled out to immigrants that don't contribute but are earning monies and not contributing to the SSI pool. And don't let us forget all those politicians in Washington that we voted in that also contribute $0 who will continually collect after they will end their political careers without contributing.
What a great country. Collect without contributing. Happy Holidays!

Immigrants, legal or otherwise, contribute to the system just like you do (did) Frank.
All employers are required to withhold payroll tax, whether you're an immigrant or not. If you're self-employed, it's easier for immigrants to cheat, just like for your native-born neighbor.

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond.Just why do you thing
Just why do you thing employers hire illegals T? Do you think it is because they communicate so well with them seeing how they don't speaka d englais? No! They hire them because to hire a legal worker it costs 3 times what they pay the worker to cover workers comp, unemployement, Employers Contribution to Social Security, and all that other nifty stuff. A legal worker comes with a Social Security number under which the employer submits those payments along with the employees contribution and income tax withholding, FICA and all the nifty items under which the employer has to keep money back from the employee and ship it of to the state and fed never to be seen again by the working stiff or the emplyer. Now the employer hires an illegal, no social security number T, no employer contribution, no unemployment compensation insurance, no workers compensation, no messing around with withholding, just hand the " no speak a d engais cash at the end of the day and the rest stays in the employers pocket. In short THERE IS NO PAYROLL TAX WITHHOLDING OR EMPLOYER CONTRIBUTION FROM ILLEGALS WORKING IN THE US. Comprende?
