TOGUS – Lewis A. Gray Sr., 75, of Kaplan Drive, North Monmouth, died Saturday, June 30, at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was born in Fayette on Nov. 25, 1931, the son of Howard and Clara (Varney) Gray.

He attended Winthrop High School and entered the U.S. Army, where he served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne during the Korean War.

His love in life was harness racing. For many years, he was owner, trainer and driver. He temporarily gave up harness racing to raise a family.

Lewis had worked for Globe Albany in North Monmouth for 13 years and retired from Heritage Manor in 1994.

After his retirement, he returned to harness racing with his two sons and brothers.

He very much enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by two sons, Lewis Gray Jr. and his wife, Tammy, of North Monmouth and Shawn Gray and his companion, Alicia Brown, of South Gardiner; four daughters, Debbie DeBlois and her husband, Timothy, of North Monmouth, Denise Chick and her husband, Craig, of Monmouth, Wendy Gray of Winthrop, and Cheryl Deshaies and her husband, Willie, of Livermore Falls; two brothers, Luther Gray of Oxford and Douglas Gray of Lewiston; four sisters, Delma Dodd of Reno, Nev., Donna Turner of Norway, RuthAnn Bailey of Livermore Falls, and Becky Mercier of Bangor; nine grandchildren, Stephanie, Susan, Nathan, Taylor, Emma, Timothy Jr., Ashley, Nicholas and Carson Lewis; his former wife, Joan Gray of Monmouth; his companion, Helen Rines of Pittston; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and uncles.

He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
