MONDAY, Aug. 17

LEWISTON — Finance Committee regular meeting, 5:15 p.m. in the Administrator’s Conference room on the bottom floor of City Hall.

AUBURN — City Council workshop and regular meeting in the City Council Chamber on the second floor of Auburn Hall. Workshop meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Topics include creating a community garden program and overall block grant money spending toward revitalizing downtown neighborhoods. The regular meeting follows at 7 p.m. and topics include property on Newbury Street, confirming an assistant city manager and getting a quote on emergency dispatch services from Androscoggin County.

LEWISTON — School Committee meeting, 6:45 p.m., City Council Chamber, City Hall. Three big items on agenda: Vote on the site for new elementary school, review of elementary class sizes and whether more teachers should be hired and review of standardized assessments for upcoming school year. The meeting will be televised live.

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 19

AUBURN — Summer concert by Auburn Community Concert Band, 7 to 8:15 p.m., Festival Plaza, downtown, concert theme: ACCB’s Greatest Hits.

AUBURN — School Committee, 6 p.m., workshop on update of School Committee goals; regular meeting at 7 p.m. Agenda: update of strategic plan, performance evaluation.

THURSDAY, Aug. 20

LEWISTON — Documentary film “Prince Among Slaves,” the true story of African prince Abdul Rahman, captured in West Africa and enslaved in the American South in 1788. It will be shown from 6:30 to 8 p.m., followed by discussion. Part of a four-part Muslim Journeys series co-sponsored by Maine Humanities Council and Lewiston and Auburn libraries.

LEWISTON  — Historic Preservation Review Board regular meeting, 3 p.m. in the Administrator’s Conference Room on the bottom floor of City Hall. Topic will be the review of a certificate of appropriateness for rose window and signs at the Agora Grand, the former St. Patrick’s Parish at 220 Bates St.

FRIDAY, Aug. 21

Great Falls Balloon Festival opening day at Lewiston’s Simard-Payne Memorial Park, with children’s area, carnival and food booths opening at 4 p.m., vendors tents at 5 p.m., a balloon launch at 6 p.m., weather permitting, and balloon glow at 9 p.m. 

SATURDAY, Aug. 22

Great Falls Balloon Festival, 6 a.m balloon launch and pancake breakfast, a parade at 11 a.m. and food, vendors booths and live music all day at Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston and Festival Plaza in Auburn. A balloon launch is scheduled at 6 p.m., weather permitting.

SUNDAY, Aug. 23

Great Falls Balloon Festival, 6 a.m balloon launch and pancake breakfast, the Triple Crown Series – Bridge Run at 8:30 a.m., a rubber duck race in the Main Street canal at noon, and food, vendors booths and live music all day at Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston and Festival Plaza in Auburn. A balloon launch is scheduled at 6 p.m., weather permitting.
