LEWISTON – Since she got a surprise proposal during a Martel Elementary School assembly, school secretary Rebecca Lussier has been in full wedding-planning gear.
Last January, after getting help from Principal Steve Whitfield, Lussier’s boyfriend, Bill Hensley, got down on one knee and pulled out a ring.
Lussier reports the wedding will be July 20 at the First Universalist Church in Auburn. “We have invited Mr. Whitfield and some people from Dingley,” the school’s administrative office building.
It will be the Lewiston School Department affair of the summer.
Officiating will be Diane Duplissis, a good friend of the bride, a notary public and Superintendent Bill Webster’s administrative assistant. The reception will be at the school gym.
“I got engaged at the school,” Lussier said. “This is home to me.” They’ll have dancing and music. “He loves the ’80s. I love country.”
Catering will be provided by her friends, the school’s lunch ladies.
The wedding will be simple, Lussier said, a small wedding party, consisting of the best man and maid of honor. She’ll wear the dress she picked out with her mother. Lussier didn’t disclose details of the gown; like Kate Middletown, the Duchess of Cambridge, it’s under wraps until the big day.
Students who watched the proposal often ask their school secretary questions. “They want to know where it is, when it is, will my last name be changed,” Lussier said. (Yes, she’ll be taking her husband’s name.) Some girls have offered their services as flower girls. “They’re definitely interested,” she said.
Since the couple’s school engagement, Bill Hensley has become an employee of Lewiston schools, working in the IT department.
Incorporating school details into the wedding plans “has been a lot of fun,” Lussier said.
