LEWISTON — Lewiston High School’s Centre Stage Ensemble will perform the classic Broadway musical “Oliver!” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 25, 26 and 27.
Based on the Charles Dickens novel “Oliver Twist,” the production features a 55-person cast and crew ranging from 9 to 50-plus years old.
For the first time in recent memory, the Centre Stage Ensemble invited young music and drama students from Lewiston elementary and middle schools to audition. More than 70 young students auditioned; 32 were cast in the youth ensemble.
The plot revolves around Oliver, played by fifth-grader Scott Venable of Martel Elementary School; fifth-grader Samantha Girourd-Holt of Geiger Elementary is his understudy. The LHS cast includes Chris Belanger as Mr. Bumble, Marina Belanger as Widow Corney, Brandon Chaloux as Noah Claypole/Dr. Grimwig, David Carvalho as Mr. Sowerberry, Rebecca Spilecki as Mrs. Sowerberry, Amber Girardin as Charlotte, Zan Wong as The Artful Dodger, Scott Gagne as Fagin, Brittany Martin as Nancy, Kate Audet as Bet, Dyandrea Labonte as Old Sally, Ryan Dubois as Bill Sykes, Jessica Henson as Mrs. Bedwin, and Nate Chaloux as Mr. Brownlow.
Rounding out the LHS ensemble are Sylvia Beliveau and Michael Frazier as Pickpockets, Veronica Beaudoin as the rose seller, Ruth Choate as the strawberry seller, Leslie Reed as the milk maid, Chris Poulin as the long song seller/knife seller, Melissa Brimigion and Sarah Wing.
The youth ensemble includes Fagin’s Pickpockets and Workhouse Orphans. Playing Pickpockets are Kent Mayerson as Charlie Bates, Samantha Girard-Holt, Heidi Hampton-Reynolds, Machaela Laramee, Madison McCallum, Faith Robinson, Renee Roundy, Bhramari Schiff and Jonathan Vining. Starring as Workhouse Orphans are Amanda Alberda, Courtney Allen, Isaiah Andreis, Shauna Babine, Grace Banks, Sam Blaisdell, Jonathan Carvalho, Brianna Girardin, Corinne Laberge, Kaylyn Labonte, Moira Meehan, Nicole Morin, Erin Morris, Barbara Roundy, Sylvia Schulze, Anya Siviski, Zoe Tedeman, Brianna Theriault and John Van Dyke.
The play is directed by Richard Martin, with vocal direction by Rebecca Poppke, musical direction by Courtney Babbidge and the help of choreographer Lacey Moyse.
The production crew includes Amber Thibault, stage manager, assisted by McKayla Girardin; Kim Morin as assistant choreographer; Brandon Chaloux as props master; David Holinger as producer; Susan Wong, Jeanne Martin and Amey Feeley as costumers; Loretta Perry, seamstress; and Glen Thibault, Bob Belanger and David Holinger, set constuction.
“Oliver!” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the Lewiston Middle School Auditorium, 75 Central Ave. Tickets are $8 for adults/$5 for students and seniors. They may be purchased at the door; the box office will open at 5:30 p.m.
