LHS Speech Team represented at nationals

Once again, the time is fast approaching, when the national competitions for Speech will occur. The Lewiston High School Speech Team, after doing very well in the qualifying tournaments, will be represented at two national competitions by three of its members. These students are Cassie Jensen (who will be attending both national tournaments), Rachel Spilecki, and Ashley McWhorter. The categories they will be competing in include Original Oratory, Dramatic Interpretation, and Humorous Interpretation. However, before more detail is added to this subject, a bit of explanatory information might be helpful for those people who do not know what Speech is.

Speech is part of the National Forensic League – a nation-wide association that originated in the early 1900’s. Commonly called Speech and Debate, it is an association in which members compete in tournaments and gain points through their winnings. The competitions’ categories in Speech include Humorous Interpretation, Prose, Poetry, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Original Oratory, among others. What is performed in these categories include many genres of literature, such as short stories, excerpts of plays, and poetry. Once a year, there is an NFL and a CFL tournament, which are national tournaments open to those students who qualify from their state. Each year, a different location is picked for the tournaments to be held at, which makes it very exciting for the students and coaches.

The CFL National Tournament will take place on May 25-29 in Chicago, Illinois, and the NFL National Tournament will be held in Dallas, Texas during the month of June. Following the CFL Tournament, the Lewiston Speech Team will be holding a Performance Night to showcase the students’ talent, as well as raise needed funds for the team. Any contributions, monetary or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully, the Nationals will be a good experience for the team members and the excellent, inveterate tradition of Speech at Lewiston High School will continue.
