NEW YORK (AP) – A woman rushing to comfort a friend whose father had died was hit and killed by a minivan Friday as she crossed a Long Island street.

Louise Isabella, 72, was stepping away from a parked car in Hempstead not long after sunrise when she was struck.

The Baldwin woman and her daughter had been on their way to visit a family friend who had called distraught, saying her 77-year-old father had died that morning of congestive heart failure.

“We just wanted to be there for her,” said Isabella’s daughter, Luann Viglione.

The driver of the vehicle tried to render first aid, but it was too late. “It was an accident.

It wasn’t his fault,” Viglione told Newsday.

Isabella was a retired paralegal who had been active in the local Republican Party, and spent many mornings brewing coffee at a convenience store owned by the family.
