Lightning strike KOs telephones

MECHANIC FALLS – A lightning strike knocked out phone service to area customers at about 2 p.m. Monday, but most phones were back in service by 1 p.m. Tuesday, a Verizon spokesman said.

Lightning disabled the electronics in a feeder route that has the potential to serve 96 customers, said Peter J. Reilly. He said Verizon received 29 reports of lost service.

“There was quite a bit of damage to the electronics,” he said.
