LEWISTON — City crews will be working to excavate and repair a leaking cast-iron pipe located at 550 Lisbon St. between Adams Avenue and Bleachery Street starting Monday.
The work is expected to last three days until Wednesday.
The leak caused a pothole along Lisbon Street last week, according to a release issued by City Hall Friday. It is located about 150 feet north of a sinkhole that formed along Lisbon Street in 2006.
“During the work, Lisbon Street traffic will be detoured and limited as follows:
• Northbound traffic on Lisbon Street headed into the downtown will be detoured at East Avenue, to Bartlett Street and then to Adams Avenue.
• Lisbon Street will service local traffic only— residents and businesses — from East Avenue to Androscoggin Avenue.
• Southbound traffic coming from Canal Street will remain open as one lane until past the work zone.
According to the city, a large excavation must remain open until the repair is complete, and the traffic detours will be in place around the clock. Traffic is expected to return to normal on Thursday.
Nearby canals will also be drained to remove water from the site. Funds for the repairs were approved as part of the city’s 2010 Lewiston Capital Improvement Plan.
