Little League: Cox pitches ASLL gem


AUBURN — Auburn Firefighters and Pepsi dueled it out again in the Auburn Suburban Little League major division, with AFF’s Austin Cox hurling a one-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory.

Noah Yarnevich led off in the top of the first with a bloop single for the Firemen. After stealing second and third, Yarnevich scored on a single by Tyler Blanchard for the only run.

Starting on the mound for Pepsi, Jared Norcross-Plourde allowed only three hits and struck out five in the first two innings. Pepsi’s C.J. Jipson took over the pitching duties in the third inning and finished the game, allowing no runs on two hits and eight strikeouts.

Shammond Thomas smacked a frozen rope to deep center in the second inning but was later left stranded on third for the Firemen. AFF threatened again in the third inning after hits by Cox and Kyle Herald and a walk by Christian Beliveau loaded the bases, but Herald was tagged for the third out by Pepsi’s Gavin Bates on a gutsy attempt to steal home.

Cox struck out 13, yielding a double to Ryan Kappelmann.

In another major tilt, Willis Defeated Austin Associates, 14-2. Cole Butler led the way for Willis with strong pitching along with a home run. Caleb Hebert belted a pair of triples, while Quinn Myrick and Curtis Ouellette each had a double. Billy Duclos smacked a double for Austin Associates.


East Auburn collected its second majors win of the season, 16-7, over Hardy, Wolf & Downing. Donnie Peterson pitched four strong innings for East Auburn. Jaelen Coney hit an inside-the-park home run, and Timmy Torres had two hits for East Auburn. Nicholas Allen-Smith also picked up a hit in the victory. Mason Brushwein led HWD with two hits. Ian Brushwein contributed a double.

Elliot Ave.

LEWISTON — On a beautiful and warm evening in Elliot Ave. Little League play, United Ambulance upped its record to 4-3 with a 9-6 victory over Skelton, Taintor and Abbott.

Skelton plated the first run of the contest on a throwing error, which allowed Sean O’Donnell to reach third. He scored on an RBI groundout by Jeremy Rancourt.

United wasted no time in answering with two quick runs of its own on base hits and steals by Isaac Escobar and Eddie Turgeon off Skelton starter Rancourt. Meanwhile, United hurler Damien St.Pierre cruised through the first four innings, allowing only two hits while striking out five. He also helped himself with the glove, chalking up four assists.

Jess Lopez (double) and Escobar (single) each had RBIs in the second as United pushed the lead to 5-1. Skelton scored unearned runs in the third and fourth to make it 5-3, but United answered back with three in its half of the fourth.

St.Pierre ran into a tough patch in the top of the fifth, giving up three runs (two earned) before giving way to reliever Lopez, who shut the door in the sixth to earn the save. St.Pierre got the win. Rancourt took the loss. Repeat hitters for Skelton were O’Donnell (2-for-4) and Rancourt (2-for-3). Ben Chasse also had a double. St. Pierre and Elias Atkins also had hits for United. Turgeon had three RBI.

AUBURN — VFW topped Poisson’s, 3-0, in a pitchers’ duel at Pulsifer Field.

Brandon Case pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Griffin Verrill closed out the game with 1 2/3 frames of scoreless ball for VFW. Jason Cote padded a one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run triple.

Zachary Boyd tossed a gem for Poissons, hurling a complete game with 12 strikeouts. He surrendered two earned runs in the contest.

VFW has won four straight after starting the season 0-4.
