Livermore Falls man faces kidnapping charge

NEW SHARON — A Livermore Falls man was arrested on a charge of felony kidnapping Sunday night after holding a baby to apparently get the mother to return to the home where the man then threatened to harm the mother, said Lt. Niles Yeaton of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.

Jeromy C. Merchant, 29, of Livermore Falls went to the home of an ex-partner on the Starks Road and found a man babysitting the 16-month-old baby. He stayed at the home waiting for the mother to return and apparently withheld the baby to get the mother to return home, Yeaton said.

The babysitter was able to get out of the house and called police.  The babysitter also told Corporal Stephen Charles and Deputies Heidi Wilcox and Chris Chase where the baby was.

The officers were able to go into the home and get the baby out as Merchant hid in a hideaway compartment of a closet, Yeaton said.

According to Yeaton, Merchant did have a knife and made threats to harm people and allegedly threatened to harm the mother but no one was injured in the incident.

Merchant  faces the felony charge of kidnapping along with charges of terrorizing, burglary and violation of bail and is expected in court Monday, Yeaton said.
