PORTLAND — The incomparable star of stage and screen, Liza Minnelli, will open Portland Ovations’ 2010-11 season, performing at Merrill Auditorium on Sept. 29. Minnelli will appear for one night only with a quartet led by jazz pianist Billy Stritch, son of Broadway star Elaine Stritch.
The 7:30 p.m. concert will feature Minnelli performing classic American standards.
Portland Ovations members will get first dibs on ticket purchases, as well as tickets for the entire season, beginning Monday, June 7. Tickets for the general public will be available beginning Monday, June 21.
The daughter of actress Judy Garland and movie director Vincente Minnelli, Liza has been performing in the spotlight her entire adult life. She has won an Oscar, an Emmy, two Golden Globes, multiple Tony Awards and numerous other accolades for her work on-stage, on camera and in the recording studio.
Her recent appearances in a Snickers commercial and on the TV show “Arrested Development” have created a new generation of fans. She will also make a cameo appearance in the film “Sex and the City 2,” due to hit theaters in May.
“We are so excited to be able to bring such an iconic artist like Liza Minnelli to Portland,” said Portland Ovations Executive Director Aimee Petrin. Ovations’ 2010-11 season will include a variety of performing arts, including dance, jazz, classical music, national Broadway tours, theater and family friendly events.
