Local Briefs: Field hockey officiating classes offered


GARDINER — Classes for officiating field hockey will be held on Tuesday evenings from June 7 through June 28. There will be four classroom sessions with a chance for field sessions in July.

Sessions will be held at Gardiner High School from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please contact Charlotte Sinclair at Central Maine Field Hockey Association, 712-2783, if you are interested.

Any new official, apprentice or first-year level one official is encouraged to attend. These sessions will prepare you to take your officiating practical in August. There will be a $10 fee.

LHS announces summer hoop camp

LEWISTON — Blue Devil Summer Hoops will begin at Lewiston High School on June 20. The program runs Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon each day for five weeks.

Blue Devil Summer Hoops is a fundamentals camp for players entering grades 2 to 8. The program has run for two years and has helped many area players improve and have fun playing the great game of basketball.

Basics of shooting, footwork, dribbling and having fun are stressed. Games are played against area teams once a week. Lewiston High School players and coaches run the camp, which is co-ed. Family discounts are available.

Noyes golf tourney

SOUTH PORTLAND — The second-annual Matt Noyes Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15 at Sable Oaks Golf Club.

Noyes played football for Scarborough High School and hockey for Cheverus. He died of brain cancer. The tournament keeps Noyes’ memory alive and also helps some worthy causes. All proceeds will benefit the Noyes Brain Tumor Foundation, Camp Sunshine and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Cost is $375 per foursome. It includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, prizes and a catered lunch provided by Famous Dave’s BBQ. Coffee prior to tee-off is provided by Tim Horton’s of South Portland. Golfers may sign up by going to www.benefittournament.org.

Bowdoin hoop drills clinic

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College basketball staff will host a drill exchange clinic Sunday, June 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The clinic is for middle and high school coaches and will be a great opportunity for coaches to share ideas about the game.

Dixfield Legion tryouts

DIXFIELD — Swasey-Torrey Post 100 American Legion baseball invites any player that would be interested in playing ball from June 16 to July 24 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays to try out for this year’s team.
