100 years ago, 1910

Among the catches made at Lake Auburn yesterday was a 2½ pound salmon by J. R. Little and two salmon, one a 2-pounder and the other a 6, were caught by Frank Merrill. Joe Klusener, who is one of the guides at the boat house, took out a party which caught five, making 13 in all which Klusener’s boat has pulled in so far this season.

50 years ago, 1960

Three Edward Little High School students tied for top honors among the 10 high honor recipients in the senior class, it was announced yesterday by Principal Arnold G. Westerberg.

Locked in a three-way tie for top honors are Susan Chapin, Carlene Lane and David Piper.

Among the seven other honor pupils are Irwin Shiffer, Nina Miles, Arline Plummer, Stuart Field, Sharon Bixby, Constance Barlow and Stephen Beale.

25 years ago, 1985

L & A Tire Co. of Lewiston has become the largest retail auto-parts company in northern New England, with the purchase last week of R.I. Mitchell/Consumer Auto Parts stores.

The purchase of R.I. Mitchell/CAP’s 10 stores gives L & A Tire — which also operates the VIP Auto Discount stores — 23 retail locations in Maine and New Hampshire. Combined sales of the businesses are estimated to top $20 million.

L & A Tire President Thomas O. Auger said Monday night he has no immediate plans to change the operation of the stores, which will continue to run under their existing names.
