100 years ago, 1910

In spite of the rough weather of the past few days news of spring came to hand yesterday in the form of a spray of trailing arbutus in bloom. One of the men connected with West Bros. lumber camps on the Lisbon Road, while clearing away for a road to haul logs, reported seeing many small mayflower buds and this one in full bloom.

50 years ago, 1960

A 25-cent increase in the price of haircuts, effective April 1, was announced yesterday by 11 Auburn barber shops.

“We had no alternative but to go up or get out of business as a whole,” the barbers involved declared in a joint statement.

The price of regular haircuts will be hiked from $1 to $1.25, the barbers reported. Cost of special-type haircuts, such as crew-cuts and flat-tops, also will go up a quarter. Children are included.

25 years ago, 1985

President of the Snowshoe Congress Committee Roland Tanguay met Sunday evening with the trainer and sports director of La Tuque Rouge Snowshoe Club of Sherbrooke, Quebec. The meeting took place at the Montagnard Club room to discuss the walkers of La Tuque Rouge Snowshoe club.

The trainer, Mark Roy, said he expects his walkers to arrive in Lewiston by tonight at 6.
