Responding to urgings from Gov. Joseph E. Brennan, the Lewiston City Council Tuesday night approved funding for a special referendum on a University of Maine at Lewiston-Auburn bond issue.

The council approved spending $5,500 on the referendum in May or June, but the actual decision on whether to hold the referendum will be decided later this month. The decision depends on the Auburn City Council following suit with a second UML-A referendum in that city.
