100 years ago, 1910

The Great Department Store in Lewiston never looked more attractive than it did yesterda, the first day of the grand spring opening. Each of the several departments has a new full line of goods embracing the latest fabrics and designs. The Great Department Store has an enviable reputation for being up to date and the casual observer can readily see that this spring is no exception.

50 years ago, 1960

Negotiations for purchase of Bowlaway Alleys, 110 Middle St., by Mr. and Mrs. Emilio Vangeli, operators of the Steckino Hotel Inc. next door, are expected to be completed today. Vangeli said yesterday the alley area will be utilized to expand the hotel’s restaurant business. Frank Malier owns the bowling alley.

25 years ago, 1985

FARMINGTON — Patricia Hurlbert, a 1962 graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington and a teacher at Camden-Rockport High School, was chosen Maine Home Economics Teacher of the Year by the Maine Home Economics Association at a recent meeting of the MHEA at UMF.

Ms. Hurlbert is credited with developing a study skills program for freshmen that includes all the academic disciplines.

A plaque was presented to Hurlbert by the 1984 Home Economics Teacher of the Year, Ann Zdanowicz, a teacher at Mt. Ararat.
