100 years ago, 1910

Auburn is to have the first probation officer in this county, Frank H. Smith having been appointed to that position for a period of four months by Governor Fernald this week. As far as is known there are only two other probation officers in the State. Mr. Smith, who is a real estate dealer, was formerly a deputy sheriff and has also been a police officer and his friends believe him well qualified for the work.

50 years ago, 1960

The annual poll tax canvass in Lewiston probably will start next Tuesday, the Board of Assessors reported yesterday.

As in past years, off-duty police and firemen will be hired to make the canvass. It is for the purpose of counting for the record, all males over 21, all registered female voters and the number of livestock for personal property tax purposes.

25 years ago, 1985

Sherri Grenier and her troupe of puppets will star in a series of shows scheduled during National Children and Hospitals Week at Central Maine Medical Center. The shows will examine how youngsters can avoid situations that could result in abuse or abduction and what to do if such situations occur. Special coloring books entitled “It’s OK to Say No,” balloons and bookmarks will be distributed to youngsters attending the performances.
