100 years ago, 1910

Whether the new street on property owned by Dr. Wallace E. Webber, the defeated Republican candidate for mayor, and which has been known as “Webber Avenue,” should be called “Nudd Avenue,” as the aldermen wished or “Maloney Avenue,” as desired by the Common Council was not settled at last night’s meeting of the city government. It is understood that it was the wish to name the street “Nudd” because that name would be the least desired by Dr. Webber.

50 years ago, 1960

Fancy Hollywood type automobile mufflers, or any type of muffler designed to allow more motor noise on a car than the muffler installed by the manufacturer, will become illegal in Maine starting April 1.

The penalty for violation of the new statute is provided for in the general penalty section of the state’s motor vehicle laws, which calls for a fine of not less than $10 nor more than $100, or by imprisonment for not more than 90 days or by both.

25 years ago, 1985

The Cavalier and Les Dames Cavalier snowshoe clubs of Lewiston are hosting a snowshoe parade Sunday involving a number of clubs from Lewiston and Biddeford.

Cavalier founder Richard Laliberte said Friday that the parade will leave Kennedy Park at 11:30 a.m.

Following the parade, the Cavalier Club, at 308 Lisbon St,. will host dancing from 1 to 5 p.m., with lunch available.
