100 years ago, 1910

On Tuesday evening, John Wiseman entertained about 20 fellow members of Iota Chapter, Sigma Lambda Nu Fraternity, at his home on Main Street. The evening was spent in an informal manner. Vocal solos were rendered and readings were also given. The host served refreshments of ice cream, nabiscoes, assorted cookies, confections, fruit punch and cake. The party broke up at a late hour after singing several snappy frat songs and giving the frat yell in honor of the host.

50 years ago, 1960

Gov. and Mrs. John H. Reed will participate in the Maine Dairy Day parade through the Twin Cities on May 27, it was announced last night by Mrs. Hotham of Auburn, president of the Maine Dairy Club.

Gov. and Mrs. Reed will ride in the parade which will move through both cities but will be unable to attend the coronation ceremonies that night at Hasty Memorial Armory due to a previous commitment.

25 years ago, 1985

Fred the Collector says he will “wake people up, start their day and keep ’em going” when he returns to the radio airwaves Saturday morning.

WCOU radio is resurrecting Fred’s show, twhich features “country-oriented oldies,” from the grave of the defunct WRXV radio.

AM radio “is someone who talks to you, gives you hints — a kind of friend,” he said, adding that he will add a touch of comedy and spoofs on such things as the news and soap operas.
