100 years ago,1911

POPHAM BEACH — The many Lewiston and Auburn people, who are in the habit of visiting this place and Bay Point at the mouth of the Kennebec River, will enjoy their charms more than ever during the coming season. The draining of the marsh and swamp lands on this side of the river was begun this week in a systematic effort to exterminate the obnoxious mosquito, who has, heretofore, been one of the worst enemies the summer populace has had to contend with.

50 years ago, 1961

Bicycle Safety Week in Auburn will include a program at the Webster Junior High School yard.

Patrolman Joseph P. Savignano has taken over directing the program in place of Patrolman Gustave A Tardiff, who is hospitalized.

Those participating by having their bicycles inspected and taking the routine tests will receive American Safety League membership cards and a league sticker for their bicycles.

25 years ago, 1986

Charles Walton, a member of the Lewiston Police Department’s Youth Bureau, will speak at the Wednesday noon luncheon at the Auburn-Lewiston Kiwanis Club at Quality Inn Roundhouse.

Walton will discuss the local drug-abuse scene as it relates to youth and efforts to control its growth. He also will encourage the club to continue its efforts in chemical-abuse educational programs in the local school system.
