Shortly after 7 o’clock on a recent hot day a report was received at the Auburn police station that two nude men were sitting on a large rock on the riverbanks.  The marshal and an officer went to the scene but could not find the men. They were told, however, that the men swam across the river from Lewiston and had returned. Lewiston police were notified but upon their arrival on the Lewiston side the men had disappeared.

Prof. Leland F. Bechtel of Lewiston, a member of the Bates College faculty, was elected president of the Wallace School PTA at the annual meeting Tuesday night. Other officers elected were Mrs. Herbert Miller, secretary; Mrs. Inez Rowe, treasurer; Mrs. Michael Buccigross, membership chairman; and Mrs. Francis Knowlton, hostess for the year.

Hands Across America may have dwarfed Hands Across Oak Street in terms of participation and amount of cash raised. Still, Lewiston’s blocklong event involving 75 people and $125 in donations captured the same enthusiasm and charitable sentiment of the nation-crossing extravaganza.

“I look at it as $125 more for the national organization that wouldn’t have been there,” said local organizer Sheila B. Barnies, who will send money collected in a five-gallon plastic jug to Hands Across America.
