The marshal and an officer went to the scene but could not find the men. They were told, however, that the men swam across the river from Lewiston and had returned. Lewiston police were notified but upon their arrival on the Lewiston side the men had disappeared.

Hands Across America may have dwarfed Hands Across Oak Street in terms of participation and amount of cash raised. Still, Lewiston’s blocklong event involving 75 people and $125 in donations captured the same enthusiasm and charitable sentiment of the nation-crossing extravaganza.
“I look at it as $125 more for the national organization that wouldn’t have been there,” said local organizer Sheila B. Barnies, who will send money collected in a five-gallon plastic jug to Hands Across America.
