100 years ago, 1910

While April was an unusually warm month, according to the weather bureau statistics, May promises to be cold enough to even things out. Many Lewiston people blame Halley’s comet for all of the cold, stormy weather during the past two weeks.

50 years ago, 1960

The A & W Root Beer Co. of Lewiston, a firm with headquarters in Vermont, has started construction of a drive-in stand on Sabattus Street, beyond Thorne’s Corner. Lewiston Building Inspector Bertrand R. Rioux said he had issued a building permit to a John Wheeler for the stand. Considerable bulldozer work has been done at the site.

25 years ago, 1985

WALES ā€” Residents will be able to pick up USDA donated cheese, butter, rice and powdered milk distributed by Androscoggin Valley Community Action in Sabattus or Greene.

The distribution in the Sabattus Town Hall will be on May 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at Greene Town office on May 22 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Families who receive HEAP (fuel assistance) elderly tax and rent refund, food stamps, elderly drug card, Medical Card or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are eligible to receive the donated commodities.
