FRANCONIA, N.H. (AP) – A frostbitten hiker who had been missing since Saturday was found Monday on Mount Lafayette, bundled in his sleeping bag with gloves on his feet.

Brian Gagnon, a 24-year-old Plymouth State University graduate student, separated from his two friends on Saturday during a whiteout. He had placed calls from his cell phone on Sunday and searchers suspended their efforts that evening in the face of hurricane-force winds.

Rescue workers again found signs of Gagnon about 10:35 a.m. Monday, coming across a water bottle, baseball cap and ski poles.

They followed footprints for a mile and found Gagnon about 12:20 p.m. He was conscious and aboard a helicopter by 1:20 p.m. and en route to the hospital.

“He’s alive and well but has suffered some significant frostbite injuries,” said Col. Jeff Gray, chief of law enforcement for Fish and Game.
