Love Lewiston? Tell the city why.

LEWISTON – The city is compiling its own list of reasons to love Lewiston, via phone and Internet.

The city is taking suggestions for the latest application to the National Civic League’s All America City contest, according to Dot Perham Wittier, community relations coordinator.

“We just want people to list the positive things that they think should be included in our application,” she said. “Whether it’s a program or something else, we want to know about it so we can use it as a resource as we prepare our application.”

Councilors authorized city staff to begin writing a new application aimed at having the city recognized by the National Civic League. The application is due March 8.

The city created a page on its Web site, at, to collect suggestions. Staff have also created a voice mail box at 784-2956, ext. 224, for comments. Both will remain open until Feb. 1.

The city learned in April 2006 that it was one of 34 finalists invited to compete for the title. A group of 27, including several city staffers, councilors, members of the community and youth council members created a 20-minute presentation explaining how the city solved its problems.

They took their show to the competition in Anaheim, Calif., in June, but didn’t return home with the honors.

The National Civic League, which created the award, says it demonstrates national recognition for hard work and civic pride. The group typically names 10 cities as All America Cities each year.
