LEWISTON – Sophomore Brian Mahoney hit a two-out, two-run, go-ahead single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Bates a 5-2 victory over Fisher in baseball action Wednesday at Leahey Field.
Fisher starting pitcher Luis Lara held Bates to one run for six innings and had a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh.
But Alex Egelson led off the inning with a single and came home on Rob Schuler’s single to tie the game at 2-2.
After sophomore Casey McCormack drew a walk, the bases were loaded for Mahoney, who laced a single into center field to take the lead.
Erik Hood singled in McCormack to make it 5-2. Freshman Dan Cook pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win for Bates (10-13).
Anthony Perry had two hits including an RBI-single in the third for Fisher (27-14).
Bowdoin 8, Husson 4
BRUNSWICK – The Bowdoin College baseball team scored in each of the first five innings and cruised to an 8-4 victory over Husson.
The Polar Bears (22-5-1) led 7-1 after five innings, using numerous strategies to score.
In the third frame, Nick Lawler ripped a two-RBI single and Chris Mcaan scored again in the fourth inning on a grounder by John Lawrie.
Three of Husson’s four runs came in the seventh inning, when Jason Harvey cracked a three-run home run. Chad Lavway took the loss for the Eagles (20-11), allowing one earned run and three hits.
Jon Koperniak had three hits for Bowdoin, while Joe Berte, Jon Rosenthal and Chris Bucci had two apiece.
Bowdoin 9, Bates 6
BRUNSWICK – The Polar Bears jumped out to an early lead thanks to goals from Kevin Mullins and Chris Eaton in the first seven minutes.
Bates closed to within 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bowdoin defenses clamped down and allowed just two goals in a stretch as the Polar Bears rolled to a 9-6 victory in lacrosse.
Bowdoin (9-4) got a goal from Matt Chadwick just before the intermission to lead 6-3 at the break and led 7-4 after the third.
Mullins, with two goals, led a balanced Bowdoin scoring attack that saw eight different players find the back of the net. Connor Fitzgerald had three assists.
Bryan Frates led the Bobcats (9-3) with two goals, while David Pritchard added two assists.
Maine 6, BU 4
ORONO – The University of Maine softball team pushed across four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull off the come-from-behind 6-4 win over Boston University on Wednesday.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the sixth, Ashley Waters got things started for the Black Bears by leading off with a base hit, and Brittany Cheney followed with a double off the wall that scored Waters from first.
Molly McKinney drew a walk, then Amy Kuhl delivered a bloop single down the left-field line, which scored Cheney to tie the game at 4-4.
McKinney was able to score on an error to take the lead.
The Terriers loaded the bases in the seventh, but Jenna Balent got the strikeout for the final out and earned the win. BU had a 2-0 lead when Erin Provost hit a two-run home run in the third to tie it.
The Black Bears (31-15) have now won five straight.
