PORTLAND (AP) — Observances and events are taking place around Maine to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Two of the Sept. 11 terrorists flew out of the Portland International Jetport on the morning of the hijackings. The city has a Sept. 11 memorial in Fort Allen Park. One observance planned for Monday involves city police and fire departments laying wreaths there.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is also planning to unveil a monument fashioned from a piece of steel from the World Trade Center at 6 p.m. at its Portland office.
