Maine goes overtime to beat Northeastern

ORONO – Teddy Purcell’s goal at 4:17 of overtime lifted Maine to a 2-1 victory over Northeastern on Saturday.

The Black Bears (16-7-2) outshot the Huskies 33-17 but couldn’t put the game away until Bret Tyler and Keenan Hopson fed Purcell for his 13th goal of the year.

Northeastern (9-12-4) took the early lead in the first period on a Chad Costello goal at 17:38. Maine tied it in the second when Billy Ryan scored on the power play at 18:41. Tyler and Hopson assisted on that tally as well.

Maine goaltender Ben Bishop had 16 saves while Northeastern’s Brad Thiessen stopped 31 shots.

Bowdoin 3, Salem St. 1

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin scored twice in the third period to take a 3-1 win over Salem State College Saturday.

The Polar Bears (10-4-3) remained unbeaten at home (7-0) getting goals from Mike Collins and Colin Hughes in the final period.

Bowdoin netminder Chris Rossi finished with 21 saves.

WATERVILLE – Pat Noonan had two goals and two assists to lead the University of Southern Maine hockey team to a 7-2 win over Colby.

Noonan and Kyle Smith scored goals in the final 5:20 of the second to build a 3-1 lead. Smith and Mark Carragher scored early in the third as USM struck for three in the first 5:44 of the period.

Women’s basketball

USM 73, Eastern Connecticut 72

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Ashley Marble scored the go-ahead basket with eight seconds remaining and Lindsey Welch made a game-sealing steal to lead fifth-ranked Southern Maine to a 73-72 win over Eastern Connecticut.

Marble finished with her 10th straight and 39th career double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead USM (17-1). Angela Sante Fe added a career high 17 while Stacey Kent chipped in nine and set up Marble’s game-winning basket.

Bates 76, Conn. Col. 63

LEWISTON – Val Beckwith scored 21 points and had nine rebounds while Lauren Yanofsky added a career-high 20 points as Bates topped Connecticut College 76-63.

Yanofsky also had five blocked shots and six rebounds and four assists while Maria Kostakis added 13.

A late surge in the first half gave the Bobcats (11-7) a 30-22 lead at the half. After a Conn College comeback, Bates answered with a 17-2 run to open the lead again.

Bowdoin 75, Amherst 47

AMHERST, Mass. – Eileen Flaherty scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Bowdoin to a 75-47 win over Amherst.

Jill Anelauskas added 14 and Leah Rubega scored 11 points and had nine rebounds for the Polar Bears (19-1).

St. Joe’s 69, Newbury 35

STANDISH – St. Joseph’s held Newbury to 28 percent shooting from the field and 17 points in the first half in a 69-35 victory.

Carolyn Freemen led the Monks (8-10) with 16 points while Megan Farrell added 12.

Salve Regina 55, UNE 41

BIDDEFORD – Margaret O’Brien scored 14 points while Megan Barry and Allegra Lovoy chipped in 13 and 12 points respectively to lead Salve Regina to a 55-41 win over UNE.

Alli Gamache and Katie Diggins each had 11 for UNE (7-10).

Maine Maritime 56, Husson 46

BANGOR – Maine Maritime overcame a 31-14 deficit at halftime to beat Husson 56-46.

Husson outscored MMA in the first half but was held to just 15 points in the second half.

Alyssa Burns had 16 points and six rebounds while Megan Franklin had 10 for MMA (14-2). Husson got 14 points from Crystal Martin and 11 from Annie McIntosh.

UMF 80, Thomas 43

WATERVILLE – Kari Simpson scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Maine-Farmington to an 80-43 win over Thomas.

Caitlyn Laflin added 14, Stephanie Bossie had 12, and Erin Johnson added 11 for UMF (14-3). Thomas (10-7) was led by Leah McNary with nine points.

Trinity 81, Colby 62

HARTFORD, Conn – Sarah Cox scored 30 points to lead Trinity College to an 81-62 win over Colby.

Colby (5-13) led the game by one with 11:50 remaining but failed to hold on. Katie McCabe led the White Mules with 20 points and seven rebounds.

UMA 81, Hesser 36

AUGUSTA – Aleigh Mills scored 17 points and hauled in 17 rebounds to lead the University of Maine at Augusta to an 81-36 win over Hesser.

Nicole Clement chipped in 14 for UMA (6-11) while Natalie Nimon and Kellie Mason each had 12.

Men’s basketball

Conn. Col. 82, Bates 65

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Christian Mosley scored 23 points to lead Connecticut College to an 82-65 win over Bates.

Mosley shot four-for-four from 3-point territory and was eight-for-nine from the field. Jeff Young added 16 points while Gabe Patton had 13.

Bates (16-3) was led by Zak Ray with 19 points, six assists and five rebounds. Rob Stockwell chipped in 17 points and eight rebounds.

UNE 58, Salve Regina 55

BIDDEFORD – The University of New England had four players in double digits in a 58-55 win over Salve Regina.

Isaac Stickney led UNE (4-14) with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Nick Farynaz and Steve Belmonte each added 12. Tom Button had 11 points and 19 rebounds..

Trinity 77, Colby 68

WATERVILLE – Patrick Martin had 21 points and six rebounds as Trinity opened a lead in the second half for a 77-68 win over Colby.

Adam Choice had a collegiate-high for Colby (10-10) with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Amherst 73, Bowdoin 55

BRUNSWICK – Amherst remained unbeaten with a 73-55 win over Bowdoin Saturday in men’s basketball.

Bowdoin (11-7) got 15 from Jordan Fliegel and 13 from Andrew Hippert.

UMF 80, Thomas 48

WATERVILLE – Sean Fry scored 24 points and hauled in seven rebounds to lead the University of Maine-Farmington to an 80-48 win over Thomas.

Matt St. John added 22 points for UMF (8-9). Reggie Jett led Thomas with 12 points.

Eastern Conn. 73, USM 72

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Mike Parker scored 16 of his team-high 23 points in the second half, including a pair of free throws in the final seconds to lead Eastern Connecticut to a 73-72 win over USM Saturday in men’s basketball.

Josh Daniels led USM (6-12) with 25 points.
