Maine hiker dies on moonlit trail

JAFFREY, N.H. (AP) – A Maine man died during a moonlit hike on New Hampshire’s Mount Monadnock early Wednesday.

Thomas Pummer, 59, of North Berwick, Maine, went ahead of four companions on an icy and snow-encrusted trail, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Investigators said his companions found him around 2 a.m., unconscious on the trail about of a mile from the summit.

They called for help and could not revive him with CPR.

Fish and Game officers, joined by state park staff and volunteers from Upper Valley Search and Rescue Rescuers, carried Pummer’s body more than two miles down the mountain on Wednesday.
