Maine Maritime team tops in contest


CASTINE – The Maine Maritime Academy Students in Free Enterprise team was named regional champion at the competition held on March 27 in Boston.

The team matched their educational outreach projects against the programs of other teams in their division, defeating collegiate competitors from Franklin Pierce College, Marymount University, Wilkes University and Boston College.

As a regional champion, the team will compete in the National Exposition May 21 to 23 in Kansas City, Mo. More than 100 teams will compete at the national contest.

Students in Free Enterprise encourages students to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real-life situations, and to use their knowledge to better their communities through educational outreach projects. The academy team organized 15 projects in the community.

The team is led by Nicole St. Pierre of Baileyville, SIFE president. Team members include Jacqueline Auger, Cheshire, Conn.; Jarrod Bilodeau, Livermore; Julia Knights, Brookton; Isaac Koenig, McKinney, Texas; Meghan Marshall, Madawaska; and Travis Lamontagne, Scarborough.
